We at Langer Chiropractic & Soft Tissue Therapy are disturbed by the reports in the media regarding the role of the chiropractic profession in children’s care. There has been considerable why_choose_baby
misinformation provided by some media outlets as part of a campaign to discredit chiropractic care for children. The aim of this campaign is to prevent parents from bringing their children for chiropractic care. We have found that a majority of our medical colleagues DO NOT support this campaign.

What are the facts?

  • The safety record of chiropractic is exemplary.
  • Chiropractic care has a very high expressed satisfaction rate with patients.
  • There is a significant existing evidence base and active research base in Australia and internationally that validates chiropractic care for children.
  • Chiropractors are university educated, nationally regulated healthcare professionals who care for and about their patients.
  • All chiropractors at Langer Chiropractic & Soft Tissue Therapy have at least two years post-graduate training in paediatrics.

What do Chiropractors do and how do they treat children?

The chiropractic profession is a recognized health profession in 90+ countries around the world, and according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), chiropractors diagnose, treat and prevent neuro-musculoskeletal derangements and support general health measures in their patients, primarily through the use of manual therapy (adjustments).

The code of conduct developed by the Chiropractic Board of Australia in relation to children specifies that as well as putting the needs of the child firs, that the chiropractor gains consent from the parent and child, responds appropriately to red flags (indicating a health problem that would require an immediate referral to a medical practitioner), modifies treatment application and explains known risks, benefits the limitations of the care plan agreed upon with the patient and their parent.

An October 2015 ChiroBA Position Statement acknowledges that chiropractic paediatric management training is provided by all accredited chiropractic institutions, acknowledges risks identified in the literature, and emphasises the clinical Best Practice approaches for the chiropractic treatment of children should be used. The typical chiropractic care of infants and young children involves the use of low-force low-amplitude techniques that are age appropriate and safe.

Can I have confidence in what Chiropractors do?

Chiropractors are regulated by the Chiropractic Board of Australia and like all other registered health care providers, must adhere to National Law and profession specific codes of conduct and guidelines. There are gaps in the knowledge base in relation to the chiropractic care of children and more research is needed. This is occurring.

Chiropractic care has an excellent safety record with children and is delivered by educated, regulated health care professionals. In addition, given the patient-centric nature of chiropractic care, there is high expressed satisfaction by parents/guardians seeking care of their children.

We at Langer Chiropractic & Soft Tissue Therapy are committed to ensuring evidence informed care is provided to our patients with all chiropractors at Langer Chiropractic & Soft Tissue Therapy having a minimum of two years post-graduate training in paediatrics to ensure your child receives the best care.
