Thank you to everyone who supported my ‘wheelchair challenge’ on Friday. It was exactly that, a challenge. It gave me a very small glimpse in to the challenges that those dependent on a wheelchair would face everyday.
The take home message for me was that we need to be considerate of how we interact with people with a disability. It is important to treat everyone the same, regardless of their circumstances. From my own experience of doing the Challenge I did notice that people looked at me and talked to me a bit differently, which took me a little by surprise. People don’t intentionally mean to offend or demean however every interaction has the capacity to do just that. It was an eye opening experience for me and I would definitely recommend others to take on Challenge for themselves.
